DoH improves access to information

The Department of Health's information strategy has set a ten-year framework to improve information access for the NHS, public health and social care.

The focus will be on making access to information better including GP records online by 2015.

The plans outline development of a new website, or portal, that will act as a single trusted source of information; and for test results to be available electronically and medical appointments booked or re-arranged online.

Duleep Allirajah, head of policy at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "When someone is diagnosed with cancer, there is a lot to take in regarding your illness and it can be very overwhelming.

"Providing patients with a single, online tool to access this information will help to give them a sense of control and the ability to better understand their condition in the comfort of their own home."

The charity has further welcomed the plans to make test results and repeat prescriptions available online.

But Mr Allirajah said it was important resources were put in place to ensure information was supported.

He added: "With the shock of a diagnosis, people affected by cancer may not feel in a position to make decisions related to their condition without face-to-face support."

The charity said it would be willing to work with the Government to ensure high-quality information through the online portal and sustainability.
