Nearly half failing sickness benefit assessments - DWP

clock

Thousands on sickness benefits have been found fit to work and will receive no further support under welfare system reforms.

More than one third of people who have been claiming incapacity benefit have been put into the Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) group, while 18 per cent will be given no further aid.

The government has been reassessing entitlement since October 2010 and overall 34 per cent were assessed as fit for work of those reassessed before the end of July 2011.

Those not in the ESA group but not fit enough to work immediately will be entitled to ESA in the Work-Related Activity Group while preparing for return to work.

39% have been assessed as fit for work who had been on incapacity benefits for 5 years or less. 21% were placed in the support group.

25% have been assessed as fit for work who had been on incapacity benefits for 15 years or more. 37% were placed in the support group.

Jobcentre Plus and the Work Programme will provide support as government welfare system reforms continue.
