NHS surgery delays could mean PMI is 'only option' - AMII

The Association of Medical Insurance Intermediaries (AMII) believes cuts in NHS elective surgery make private medical insurance (PMI) the only option for some people.

Yesterday, a report issued through the British Orthopaedic Association and BBC found elective surgeries were being delayed and thresholds for surgery had been increased.

In response, AMII explained that this could mean more people seeking health cover to avoid this potential disruption.

Debbie Kleiner-Gaines, treasurer and executive committee member of AMMI, said people could see the private sector as their only option.

"NHS Trusts delaying elective surgery such as hip and knee replacements make private treatment an even more attractive option to avoid unnecessary suffering," she said.

"If the NHS is cutting elective surgery, which yesterday's report by over 100 surgeons suggested, then this will be particularly stressful for those waiting for their operation. The private sector maybe their only option and those with insurance to fund it could be in the best position.

"Getting speedy treatment as well as choices about when and where they have their treatment is the norm with private medical insurance but sadly not within the NHS," she added.
