Eurozone crisis begins to hit health insurance fraud

clock

Employers should beware of healthcare providers in the eurozone trying to take advantage of expats working there when claiming for medical treatment, an insurer is warning.

According to international private medical insurer Expacare, hospitals in Greece are already recommending extended stays for patients when a shorter treatment is typically sufficient.

This trend is expected to reach Spain later this year as the recession and fallout from the eurozone crisis deepens further.

Expacare managing director Beverly Cook told WSB: "Fraud is something we all have to deal with in IPMI.

"In Greece we're now seeing examples of people being told they need two weeks in hospital instead of the five days they would normally need.

"We're expecting to see that from Spain too but we've seen that from Greece especially."

The insurer is also preparing to launch two new individual products this year and has not ruled out a venture into the UK domestic PMI market.
