A third of those employees without a workplace arranged dental plan would like access to one, a survey finds.
According to Cigna's research less than one in five workers (18%) has access to a dental plan through work, but almost a third of those excluded would like one.
The insurer said this highlighted the demands from staff were out stripping current provision.
It also found that more than 70% of the population visited the dentist in the past 12 months and revealed a direct link between dental plan membership and dentist attendance.
The YouGov study revealed employees' motivations when choosing dental benefits, including value for money, making treatment costs more affordable and being able to use it regularly.
Cigna head of product management Kirsty Jagielko, added: "We're pleased to find such a high level of dentist attendance.
"The interest in treatments to protect teeth shows that the all important preventative message is resonating with people.
"With household budgets now tighter than ever a dental plan is the ideal way to help employees manage their treatment costs and encourage regular visits to the dentist," she added.
The research has been released as part of National Smile Month which runs between May 20 and June 20.
