The number of people covered under private medical insurance (PMI) policies rose in 2008, according to figures from the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
7,335,000 people were covered in 2008, a mixture of 6,224,000 under personal and corporate PMI plans, and 1,111 000 under Healthcare Trust arrangements. In total, the number of people covered increased by 2.7% compared to 2007.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the body, said the continued rise was good news. He also said that PMI is good for companies and the economy as it enables employees to get back to work as quickly as possibly after injury or sickness.
He added: "PMI gives people the peace of mind that they are able to get access to the treatment they need, at the time they need it, where they need it."
