News that a fashion photographer has set up a website where the eggs of fashion models can be auctioned for up to £90,000 was met with disgust from infertility groups, scientists and doctors. The site is aimed at childless couples in search of the 'perfect' child.
Ron Harris, creator of the site, who stands to make 20% from each deal, was surprised at the outcry. "I am not an insensitive person. I really did not do this to make a lot of money. I just thought it was a good idea."
A spokesman from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, which regulates fertility treatment, pointed out that about 83% of IVF treatments are unsuccessful and that eggs bought abroad may not have been screened for HIV or congenital diseases. "Someone could be spending £90,000 with no guarantee of a child," he said. Such is the price of vanity.
