Recent reports in a number of national newspapers quoting 'new' mortality figures have been slammed by the source as both speculative and dated.
The reports claim new figures from the Continuous Mortality Investigation Bureau (CMIB) suggest men will soon be outliving women, which could lead to changes in insurance and annuity premiums for both sexes. However, the CMIB said it had no new figures.
In an official statement, the CMIB said: 'The projection that males may outlive females by the end of the century is simply one extrapolation based on findings published in July 1999. The projection relates to children born 100 years from now. The CMIB does not have any statistics, which indicate the cause of female longevity in relation to male longevity. In particular, recent stories that have attributed the cause of women suffering increased stress at work are pure speculation.'
