Welfare and NHS changes in Queen's Speech

clock

The Queen's Speech setting out the Conservative government's plans for its first year of government has included changes to welfare and NHS reform.

Welfare reforms will include a cap on benefits people can claim, and making young people either "earn or learn" rather than claiming benefits.

For the NHS reforms will include integrating healthcare and social care, part of the wider implementation of the NHS 5 year plan.

There will also be measures to make the NHS work seven days a week, and there will be measures to improve access to both GPs and mental healthcare.

There will be no increases in National Insurance for the next five years and more provision of free childcare for working families.

The legislation announced today covers much of what was in the Conservative election manifesto.

Huw Evans, director general at the Association of British Insurers, said: "Having worked with the previous Government on delivering sweeping reforms to the pensions market and on practical measures to reduce car insurance premiums and tackle flood risk, the insurance industry looks forward to a constructive relationship with the new Parliament.

"Over the next five years we need to ensure cross-party support to create a long-term savings culture."
