The NHS has announced it is to launch a national screening programme for bowel cancer.
The initiative aims to speed up diagnosis and improve treatments of the disease. The NHS is also planning to increase its medical workforce and levels of training in this area to help fulfil the targets of the programme.
The benefits and costs of different methods of screening will be examined during the scheme, in addition to identifying additional training requirements and producing information on the causes and symptoms of bowel cancer.
National cancer director Professor Mike Richards, said: 'There is strong evidence that deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented by earlier diagnosis and treatment for patients who present with symptoms. The programme will involve professionals from the NHS and voluntary sector to ensure improvements in care and treatment are right for both patients and the people who deliver the services.'
