Drinking a glass of orange juice a day increases the likelihood of developing diabetes later in life.
According to researchers, fruit juices that are regarded as a healthy way to start the day raise the odds of diabetes linked to poor diet and obesity by up to a quarter.
In contrast, eating whole pieces of fruit cuts the probability of developing the disease that affects 2.5 million Britons every year.
Reported in the journal Diabetes Care the link between type 2 diabetes and fruit juices was made by tracking the health and habits of more than 70,000 female nurses over an 18 year period.
The findings from this research revealed that three portions of fruit a day reduced the risk of diabetes by 18% but just one serving of fruit juice increased the chance.
It also concluded that people who consumed three glasses of apple juice a month were 15% more likely to have developed diabetes than those who got through less than one glass a month.
