Norwich Union has warned that too many people are risking their families' financial security by not successfully completing application forms.
A study based on non-disclosure cases outlined five key areas people fail to disclose when applying.
They included failing to detail treatment received for multiple sclerosis, double vision, numbness or giddiness; failing to declare current medical treatment or attention received or pending. Policyholders also failed to declare smoking status, alcohol consumption or advise to reduce alcohol consumption; as well as whether they had had episodes of depression or received any treatment over the past year.
The provider said a common myth is that an insurer will automatically get full medical records when a policy is taken out. However, insurers rely on applicants to share all the information they are asked for.
