UnderwriteMe launches to 'address the protection famine'

UnderwriteMe has launched its system at an event in London, with its Martin Werth, CEO of UnderwriteMe saying it would 'address the protection famine'.

UnderwriteMe went live with its first providers in September 2014, within providers' own propositions.

UnderwriteMe plans to cover the whole protection market within the next 18 months.

Insurers currently using UnderwriteMe are: Canada Life, Exeter Family Friendly, LV=, Old Mutual Wealth, Royal London, and SunLife.

In addition, Partnership is believed to be in talks with UnderwriteMe.

UnderwriteMe has piloted it with adviser firm LifeSearch with direct to consumer broker Cavendish going live with the system in August, with others to follow.

The system, designed to be capable of being used on desktops and mobile devices including tablets was demonstrated for those at the launch today.

Werth said: "It takes real leadership, commitment and vision to change the protection market, and I think our partners and those we are talking to are demonstrating that leadership, commitment and vision.

"It also takes bravery to challenge the existing status quo to make change, and I think it's taken a long time for us to get there, but when you are transforming an industry of course it takes time.

"Today is a big day, today is the end of the beginning, we are about to launch the very first ever digital protection platform, the very first in the UK the very first global digital protection platform to transform the protection industry forever.

"Today we will finally consign to history the idea of advisers having to second guess quick quotes, to advisers having to make numerous ‘phone calls to get a better idea of terms."

He added: "This is the start of a growth story, to address the protection famine we've faced over the last ten years."

Tom Baigrie, CEO of LifeSearch, said: "LifeSearch make and take calls to and from people who've made online or offline enquiries about protection but haven't gone through with it for whatever reason.

He added: "It has been a longstanding source of frustration for all parties, the consumer, the big brand and us that you simply in life cannot get a fairly priced underwritten quote there and then."

Baigrie said: "Thanks to the quite intentional short-sightedness of the major insurers, who should've been queueing up to reduce their underwriting costs, but instead focussed on trying to protect their market share, and still do, it has taken far too long for all of us to get to the stage where we are ready to trial actual working methods within our team."

"We will now be pioneering this whole process for the industry and learning exactly how consumers react and how best we can serve them, and then how best we can all serve them."

"We will be doing that both through our adviser team and the online journeys we run for our partners."
