Feel that you eat like a mouse but still gain weight? You may be a victim of 'snack-amnesia'. According to a recent Gallup poll women in particular are highly likely to lose track or lie about what they have consumed throughout the day. In a survey of 520 women, 54% claimed that they had not let food pass their lips between meal times in the last 24 hours, but when cornered 98% admitted they might have had a nibble, and a rather snack-happy 84% confessed to five snacks a day
Despite particularly bad attacks of snack-amnesia, which on average accounted for an additional 400 calories a day, the guinea pigs were found to be hyper-efficient at monitoring calorie consumption in the three 'proper' meals of the day. Food possession was central to the source of the forgotten snacks if the food is someone else's your children's sweets or your partner's chocolate then it does not count. Fat cells, unfortunately, have better memories
