Insurers have responded to news of Health Secretary Alan Milburn's resignation with regret, fearing his successor may lose momentum of the current reforms being made with NHS funding.
According to the Prime Minister's official spokesperson, Milburn resigned for personal reasons. The official statement read: 'Health Secretary Alan Milburn informed the Prime Minister that he wanted to leave the Government because he had he had found it increasingly difficult to balance having a young family in the North East with the demands of being a Cabinet minister.' Dr John Reid has been announced as Milburn's successor.
Mike Hall, chief executive of Standard Life Healthcare, said that in his time as Health Secretary, Milburn had tackled many controversial issues head on, much to his credit.
'While Derek Wanless has been tasked with looking at the cost of the NHS, the issue is one that needs both private and public debate. There are a number of new and emerging therapies that take the funding of healthcare to a new level. It is important that all factors are brought to the table. Alan Milburn's successor needs to be aware of these issues to take reform to the next stage,' said Hall.
