The young British man said to have been cured of the HIV virus has agreed to undergo further clinical tests in the hope they may lead to a breakthrough in finding a treatment for the condition.
Andrew Stimpson, who is aged 25, said he was willing to help tackle the disease after it emerged that his body had apparently managed to rid itself of the lethal virus.
Stimpson was diagnosed HIV positive in 2002, but a year later was found to be negative by Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust.
Commenting on the case, Deborah Jack, chief executive of the National Aids Trust, said: "This appears to be a highly unusual case and without further tests it is impossible to draw any conclusions for people living with HIV.
"Therefore, if this case were able to shed further light, it could be extremely valuable for research into treatments or a cure."
During 2004, 4.9 million people became infected by HIV and more than 3.1 million people were killed by Aids.
