Mortality rates from prostate cancer in the UK are predicted to fall dramatically over the next few years, following reports that deaths are down by one-third in the US.
New findings revealed at the European Cancer Conference in Denmark, suggest prostate cancer-related deaths are decreasing in the UK, France and some other European countries.
Despite rising mortality rates in the US during the 1970s and 1980s, a sudden fall in deaths was reported between 1990 and 2000. It is believed mortality in Europe will follow the same pattern.
Professor Sir Richard Peteo, University of Oxford, said: "Both in the US and in the UK, the mortality rates from prostate cancer are now falling fast. Two of the main reasons are earlier diagnosis and wide use of hormonal treatments."
