Axa has launched a medical screening pilot in pharmacies in a bid to cut the application process for protection cover by up to 20 days.
Run in conjunction with specialist testing company, Gemini Biomedical, the six-month pilot aims to turn around a pharmacy screening result within 10 days compared with the 25 to 30 days it takes to produce a GP report.
The screenings will include traditional tests such as height, weight, urine and blood as well as a range of cutting-edge, non-invasive tests for things like smoking, drug abuse and alcoholism.
Applicants will be able to arrange an appointment with their local pharmacist, and screenings will take place in private consultation rooms.
Commenting on the launch, Nigel Bradshaw, commercial director at Gemini, said: "The presence of a pharmacist, who can offer smoking cessation and other health-improving services, provides an extra benefit to the applicant as well as reducing claims for the insurer."
