One in eight NHS patients is unhappy with their GP service and one in five are dissatisfied with the hospital service they receive, according to a Gallup survey commissioned for The Telegraph.
The growing dissatisfaction among the UK public is illustrated by the sharp fall in confidence recorded among NHS patients. According to the survey, 89% of people thought the NHS was a success four years ago ' that figure now stands at just 76%.
Les Curson, director of healthcare consultancy Nicles, said the survey results suggest that the NHS will have to work with the private sector if it is to have a realistic future. 'For many years I have been saying that it doesn't matter which government is in power, sooner or later the government of the day will have to accept that it cannot fund the NHS with public money. It will then have to move towards working alongside the private sector, through tax relief or some other means. This poll shows that this view is still alive and is unlikely to change,' he said.
