Westfield Health has donated £250,000 to the fundraising appeal to build a new helipad at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

Construction work has since started on the new helipad, which will be closer to the hospital's Major Trauma Centre than the old helipad.

The new helipad will remove the need to transfer patients from helicopter to hospital by ambulance, as with the current helipad.

The total appeal is for £2m, and is being run by the Sheffield Hospitals Charity.

Westfield Health is based in Sheffield, and announced in March plans to move headquarters while remaining in the city.

David Reynolds, charity director at Sheffield Hospital David Reynolds said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to Westfield Health for their incredibly generous contribution.

"It has been a massive boost to our appeal and we're delighted that Chairman, Graham Moore, was able to join us at to our recent turf cutting event marking the start of construction.

"When a patient is airlifted to the hospital with major trauma, the faster they receive specialist treatment the higher their chances are of surviving. This means that every second really can count."

Graham Moore , chairman of Westfield Health, said: "The Northern General Hospital is such an important facility within our city and the surrounding areas, and the new helipad will enable the team to provide the care needed to treat patients as efficiently and quickly as possible."
