Downing Street has now confirmed that Jeremy Hunt will be staying on as the health secretary despite earlier reports that he was sacked.

Reports previously said that Jeremy Hunt was no longer health secretary as part of new prime minister Theresa May's cabinet reshuffle but would be taking on a new cabinet role.

Jeremy Hunt's official Twitter feed said: "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated...Thrilled to be back in the best job in government."

Hunt's leadership led to the first all-out strike in NHS history as he attempted to implement through a new, controversial. junior doctors contract.

Last week Jeremy Hunt said in the House of Commons that he would impose a new contract on the 54,000 junior doctors in the NHS in England from October.

The junior doctors had rejected the contract in a ballot.
