Nearly half of all GPs would consider private medical insurance (PMI) because they have such little faith in the NHS, according to a recent survey.
The study, by Hospital Doctor, questioned a total of 1,700 doctors and revealed that 22% had medical insurance and 33% would prefer private treatment. Of the 600 family doctors questioned, 28% had taken out PMI.
David Costain, medical director at Axa PPP Healthcare, said: "Despite knowing how to get the best of what the NHS has to offer, 33% of respondents indicated they would prefer to go private."
Natalie-Jane MacDonald, medical director at Bupa Health Insurance, said: "The main reasons doctors have PMI are to get back to work quickly; privacy; and being able to choose who treats them and when."
