The difficulty with cancer-related conditions at quote stage is the underwriting decision will depend on a detailed report from the client's GP. Quoting the cheapest insurer is a wasted exercise for both adviser and client.

Further questions regarding the history of the condition as well as the client's current circumstances, such as salary and existing benefits, should be asked and then several underwriters called. When considering testicular cancer we first need to know the type ' teratoma or seminoma ' the latter is the less serious ' and from here the stages range from one to three with an early and advanced category for each.

The mildest form would be a seminoma stage one, which could get ordinary rates for life cover only within four years of a full recovery, although anything more serious would be loaded, potentially heavily or even postponed. For critical illness (CI) cover and income protection (IP) it is likely both would be automatically declined, even for the mildest forms of cancer. Given the health issues, budget and the fact there are no further dependents or debts, we would only recommend life cover to clear the mortgage at this stage. Assuming the client has no dependents other than his girlfriend and he has death in service benefits through his work, we would recommend life cover to match the mortgage.

Sports should not be an issue unless they are frequent and competitive. If he does these for fun a few times a year it would make no difference and he would be covered. We would review the client's recovery over the following years, with a view to obtaining CI cover should it become available.
