Claims for breast cancer on critical illness (CI) plans reached an all-time high in the first half of this year, according to the latest figures from Scottish Provident.
The insurer paid out £7m on the condition, which works out at a quarter of its total breast cancer pay-outs since 1991. The increase was attributed to better screening and awareness of early symptoms of the disease.
Cancer was the main claims area overall, accounting for 55% of the insurer's CI claims in the first half of 2003. The other main claims areas were: heart attack, 13%; multiple sclerosis, 4%; stroke, 5%; and heart surgery, 4%.
Nick Kirwan, head of protection at Scottish Provident, said: "By providing financial support precisely when people need it, critical illness cover really works."
