The National Campaign Against Insurance Premium Tax (NCAIPT) has taken its debate to the internet with the launch of a new website, www.knaresborough.co.uk/ipt.
As well as outlining the group's objectives, the website lists all 650 MPs and their responses to the campaign against what it argues is an unfair tax by stealth.
Of the 650, 37 MPs have offered their full backing to the campaign, including William Hague and Shadow Chancellor, Michael Portillo. A further 14 have expressed interest and have contacted the Treasury on the matter.
Philip Allott, project director at NCAIPT, said: "The main objective of the campaign is to block further increases in a tax which our members believe is already approaching extortionate levels. We have the support of the City, insurance brokers, the Federation of Small Businesses and the Institute of Directors, as well as a growing body of concerned members of the public."
He added that the tax not only has serious implications for private medical insurance, but also for the NHS itself.
"We are deeply concerned about the number of people cancelling their private healthcare cover as the cost becomes increasingly prohibitive.
"The effect this flood of cancellations would have on an already stretched NHS could be disastrous and an extremely high price to pay for the continuation of this deeply unpopular tax."
Tony Parker, the campaign's chairman, added: "Over the coming months we intend to step up our work to bring about the abolition of IPT and our new website, where members of the public can see exactly where their local MP stands on the subject, is merely the first part of this."
The website includes an e-mail address through which members of the public can contact the campaign's organisers.
