The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is to issue a consultation on a Guide to Functional Assessment Tests (FATs), writes Angela Faherty.

FATS, which encompass Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Activities of Daily Work (ADWs), measure an individual's physical ability to carry out specific tasks after an accident or illness.

The guide features a five-point checklist, aimed at consumers, highlighting things to consider when comparing the features of different policies. The second section includes advice for insurers on what are considered reasonable demands when carrying out FATs.

Nick Kirwan, marketing director for protection at Scottish Widows, said: "Up to now, the way insurers have approached this varied greatly."
