With all the media coverage afforded to the NHS, virtually on a daily basis, the PMI industry and the private healthcare sector as a whole, is missing a golden opportunity to promote itself.
Despite all the money being thrown at it by the Government, the NHS is not showing any real sign of improvement. Our industry needs a higher media profile and we should be shouting from the rooftops that there is an alternative and emphasising the value and need for PMI. We can do this without reneging on the 'gentlemen's agreement' of not criticising the NHS, by just telling it as it is.
The PMI industry should be organising and sponsoring a co-ordinated PR campaign, to conduct a media-focused campaign by tagging on the back of any coverage given to the NHS. Every time there is a report on the NHS, there should be a mention of PMI and the need for it, given the problems within the state system.
A properly organised campaign will not only attract the public's attention it will focus central Government attention on the real value of PMI and create more contact between the PMI industry and the Government.
I truly believe this is the only way the industry is going to make any significant dent in the 80% of uninsured population. Let's have a few decision makers making decisions and get the industry moving.
