Eating eggs can raise diabetes risk, according to a study published in health journal Diabetes Care.

The study found that eating just one egg a day raised the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by around 60% for the general public while those already suffering from the condition who were eating more than a couple of eggs a week found their diabetes worsening.

Among women, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes through eating one egg a day rose to 77%.

However, the report said there is no risk from eating one egg a week while doctors warned patients with type 2 diabetes, or at risk of developing the condition, that they should limit their egg consumption to just three a week.

The study, conducted by researchers from Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, tracked 57,000 men and women for a period of up to 20 years.
