Legal & General has become the first non mutual of 2011 to publish its income protection (IP) claims data.

The insurer paid 93% of IP claims in 2010.

The company has confirmed it declined 5% of claims due to the policy definitions not being met or because the claimant was financially ineligible.

A further 2% of claims were unpaid due to non-disclosure.

A fifth (20%) of claims were for mental illness, 11% for cancer and 25% for musculoskeletal conditions.
