Role for PMI as CCGs limit hip and knee replacements

Private medical insurance (PMI) providers should cover short-term illnesses as CCGs have tightened the rules around hip and knee replacements, the CEO of National Friendly has urged.

Redditch and Bromsgrove, South Worcestershire, and Wyre Forest Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) have tightened eligibility criteria for hip and knee replacements as a result of funding issues. Jonathan Long, CEO of National Friendly said: "This decision by three CCGs to tighten the rules around hip and knee replacements is another clear sign of growing pressure on the National Health Service as it copes with a growing, ageing population." West Kent Clinical Commissioning Group is also suspending ‘non-urgent surgery' until April to produce savings of £3.2 million, in board document...
