Stress has been found to make multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferers' symptoms worse, according to a new study published in the British Medical Journal.
Researchers in Holland followed 73 patients with relapsing-remitting MS. Patients were reviewed every eight weeks and told to record any stressful events that were not related to their condition. A total of 457 stressful life events were reported. These events were found to double the risk of an exacerbation, although there was no evidence of a related increase in infections.
The report stated the findings are not yet fully understood, but "the knowledge adds important information to the insight that patients and their caregivers have on this unpredictable disease."
