WPA has launched a new excess health plan specially designed for couples and families.

The plan, called 1XS, offers one single excess for everyone covered by the plan as opposed to one excess per person, which is the norm with other excess plans. The maximum excess is capped at £1,200 per year.

"This means that, no matter how many people are covered by the plan and however frequently they claim, the maximum excess payment in any 12 months cannot exceed £1,500," explained Charlie MacEwan, head of communications at WPA.

The excess also works on a 'rolling basis', so that if a person reaches the £1,500 limit any further necessary treatment will be covered for the next 12 months - even if that takes the policyholder into another policy year.

The plan can be used for any UK hospital and provides for one scale of cover, regardless of where a customer lives. The cover includes outpatient and inpatient treatment, diagnostic tests and scans, specialists' fees and additional benefits, such as nursing at home for up to four weeks.

For example, if a married couple with two teenage children currently have Scale B cover with a leading UK insurer - for which they pay £3,480 per year - took out a premium of £893 with a £1,500 excess using WPA's 1XS, they would save £1,087 in the event of claiming their excess payment. If, using the same example, the family remain healthy, they would save £2,587.

Commenting on the launch, Rod Bramston, managing director of private clients division at WPA, said: "We believe 1XS offers outstanding value to people who want to take control of their family's wellbeing and of their finances."
