In a country spanning 9.6 million kilometres square and boasting a population of 1.3 billion, it is not surprising that healthcare is varied in China, writes Expatriate Healthcare's Lee Gerry.

Whilst getting access to medical treatment is easy to come by outside of rural areas, the standard of treatment and hygiene levels can vary dramatically. Generally, those living in one of China's cities benefit from Western style hospitals and countless pharmacies. It is the smaller towns and villages within the Chinese countryside that suffer greatly from hospitals with substandard hygiene and outdated facilities.
