One third of disabled adults are in 'serious' financial difficulty

25% have cut down or stopped receiving private medical services

New research has found that nearly one third (27%) of disabled adults are in “serious” financial difficulty, compared to 11% of non-disabled adults.

The University of Bristol's Personal Finance Research Centre and the Research Institute for Disabled Consumers (supported by abrdn Financial Fairness Trust) investigated financial wellbeing among 815 disabled adults. The research found that over one third (37%) of disabled people who acquired their disability suddenly were in a ‘constant struggle' to pay bills, compared to 24% of adults who had been disabled since birth, and half (52%) were unable heat their home and keep it comfortable.
