One in three families 'a paycheck' away from homelessness

One in three families in England could not pay their rent or mortgage for more than a month if they lost their job or were unable to work, a study for the charity Shelter suggests.

The online survey by YouGov for Shelter polled 8,381 adults including 1,581 people in working families with children. High housing costs, the welfare system and a lack of personal savings are cited by the charity as reasons for this. Shelter chief executive Campbell Robb said the figures showed working families are "stretched to breaking point".
