BUPA has launched a flexible personal healthcare plan focusing on private medical treatment and also on keeping clients well.
BUPA Heartbeat does not have an average premium but one based upon the client's lifestyle, hobbies and recreational habits, as well as the hospitals they choose to be treated in, the cover they choose and the way they wish to pay their premiums.
It will also cover more pre-existing conditions than previously available - BUPA estimates that 90% of policyholders will have no exclusions for pre-existing conditions. BUPA Heartbeat is available on a one, five or 10-year reviewable basis.
Fiona Harris, actuary and risk manager at BUPA, said: "The plan treats each customer as an individual and all medical history will be reviewed when they join. The plan also provides a personalised service with a health adviser team where a named nurse is available for customers to call. The core PMI element of the plan is comprehensive and customers can add on lifestyle packages for example, Fitness Check and Health Check."
Other options include the choice of a voluntary excess, fixed price or reviewable premiums or whether treatment is carried out in a local or national hospital.
The plan is available to new customers and existing policyholders opting to switch. Harris said: "The scheme will not replace those of our existing customers unless they choose to enter it but it will become the primary vehicle for new business. In effect, it will replace the BUPA Care and Essential Care schemes but it is not priced to replace BUPA Hospital Care."
Heartbeat will be available to intermediaries in January next year and in the meantime the insurer is offering brokers a series of roadshows and a training programme to explain how the plan works and how to sell the policy to clients.
