During Black History Month 2023, Jaskeet Briah speaks to Dr. Sheun Oke, managing partner and chief executive of Emergenzz Financial Services, about the accessibility of protection products for Black ethnic minorities with genetic health predispositions.

Black ethnic minorities, including people of African and/or Caribbean descent, have a higher incidence of Type 2 diabetes, sickle cell disease and stroke, but are less prone to heart disease. As such, insurers need to be "more responsive" to specific health challenges for this community, rather than applying a blanket approach, Oke tells COVER. "Many people with sickle cell are thriving but getting protection for them has become a Herculean task," Oke says.
