The number of patients awaiting treatment from the NHS reached 7.6 million at the end of May 2024, according to the health service.

Some of the 7.6m were patients on multiple waiting lists, the total number of individual patients was 6.4m. Of the list: 307,500 were waiting more than 52 weeks; 55,955 were waiting more than 65 weeks; 4,597 were waiting more than 78 weeks; and 259 were waiting more than 104 weeks. The statistics also showed that 1.8m new patients were added to the list, with the average wait time for treatment being 14.2 weeks.
