The Exeter has appointed former Friends Life protection managing director Steve Payne as a non-executive director.

Payne was managing director for protection at Friends Life where he led the integration of the protection businesses of Axa, Friends Provident and Bupa. This followed the acquisition by Resolution of the Bupa Protection business that he led.

Payne left Friends Life in 2014 following a post-Budget review and a restructure within Friends Life.

Meanwhile, The Exeter has recently re-branded away from its former Exeter Family Friendly name and has updated its income protection policies.

Payne said: "The protection market needs genuine innovation and I think The Exeter are well placed to deliver. I'm looking forward to supporting Andy and the team."

Andy Chapman, chief executive of The Exeter said: "I'm delighted that Steve has joined the Board at The Exeter. His experience and expertise will be invaluable in helping us deliver our ambitious plans."
