PruProtect is taking another step on the critical illness (CI) conditions war by adding eight new definitions to its product.
The provider has also enhanced other conditions and is offering premium reductions for cancer exclusion.
It says seven of the additions to its severity-based Serious Illness Cover plan are unique to the UK and takes the total number of conditions covered on the comprehensive version to 161, with the primary option supporting 100.
Seventeen of its definitions are rated as ABI+.
The new conditions covered are:
• Lumpectomy for Ductal Carcinoma in Situ of the Breast (DCIS);
• Carcinoma in Situ of the Oesophagus - requiring surgery;
• Severe Inflammatory Crohns disease;
• Encephalitis;
• Craniotomy;
• Guillain-Barré Syndrome;
• Spinal Tumours;
• Pemphigus Vulgaris.
All changes, including the premium reductions for cancer exclusions, will be applied to existing policyholders, with the product changes taking effect on October 23rd.
Deepak Jobanputra, actuarial & product director at PruProtect, said: "While it is great that more providers are beginning to cover mastectomy, less than a third of DCIS diagnoses are treated this way, which is why we are adding lumpectomy."
