Health and wellbeing provider, FirstAssist, has announced new enhancements to its BusinessCare product. The developments should allow advisers to better meet the needs of their small to medium (SME) sized business customers.

The web-based product now boasts a new employee wellbeing area, designed to help SMEs address the healthcare needs of their staff. Clients can access 24-hour helplines offering stress counselling, health screening and occupational health advice to assist in managing employee health requirements.

The latest addition to BusinessCare complements existing features that give SMEs support and guidance about employment, health and safety, and commercial law. It also provides useful tools such as staff disciplinary checklists and letter templates to download and tailor to suit the needs of each individual business. This service is supplemented by regular email updates on topical matters and legislative changes.

Andy Glynne, FirstAssist's BusinessCare manager, said the market offers substantial business potential, with SMEs accounting for over 50% of employment and turnover.

"It is clear that SMEs are grappling with a business environment that is increasingly bureaucratic. There were 50 new laws governing the employment of people introduced in the 1990s, but 2003 saw a staggering 20% increase in employment tribunals. The struggle to keep up with new employment laws places further pressure on businesses.

"For the SME it represents a minefield, but our product offers a solution. BusinessCare is the perfect opportunity for brokers to tap into this sector and show their understanding of the issues their clients face," he said.
