Calls for an independent working party dedicated to focussing on areas of expertise and certification in rehabilitation practices were made at an industry meeting, writes Angela Faherty.
The party, which would focus on training and service, would be made up of occupational health and vocational rehabilitation specialists, case managers as well as other rehabilitation providers.
The aim of the party would be to educate and train employers in all areas of rehabilitation by building a base of talented providers who would agree on the areas of expertise and certification required in rehabilitation practices. This would lead to better practices in the workplace and an increased awareness of the need and benefits of rehabilitation services.
Speaking at the meeting, Joy Reymond, head of rehabilitation services at UnumProvident, said: "There is a need for a party dedicated entirely to building a better base of service and certification in rehabilitation. We need a qualified base of providers to sign up and we need to collaborate in order to identify what needs to be done. One of the problems is that no single body has the monopoly in this area, and this is what we should be working towards."
Reymond hopes the concept can be promoted through rehabilitation organisations such as the National Vocational Rehabilitation Association and Case Management Society UK. However, she was keen to stress that formal discussions with these organisations have yet to take place.
