A survey on income protection claims by cause of disability from Friends Provident has shown that mental disorders, including stress, continue to be the main cause of claims. This was followed by musculoskeletal injuries, which accounted for 21% of claims in 2002. Peter Hamilton, head of protection marketing at Friends Provident, said the survey results demonstrate how an illness or injury, which may not be deemed critical, can impact people's lives.
