Trevor Matthews, chief executive of Aviva UK, is to step down from the role.
Matthews joined the board of Aviva in December 2011 and also became a member of Aviva's executive committee.
Aviva said he will not stand for re-election at the group's 2013 annual general meeting and will step down from the Board on the day prior to the AGM.
Matthews will continue in an advisory capacity for a number of months to ensure a smooth transition of his responsibilities, Aviva said.
It is one of a number of changes at the business.
David McMillan, a former CEO of Aviva's UK general insurance business, has been appointed CEO of Aviva Europe.
Elsewhere, Nick Amin is joining Aviva as group transformation director and will become a member of the group executive, reporting to group chief executive Mark Wilson.
Jason Windsor will join the company as chief strategy and development officer, while David Angulo will broaden his remit to take on global responsibility for driving the development of Aviva's bancassurance distribution across Aviva.
