The Promoting Protection campaign has already received overwhelming support from the industry since its launch last month, writes Johanna Gornitzki.

The campaign, launched in a bid to make consumers more aware of the need for protection, has gained the backing from nearly thirty firms – including smaller IFAs and larger insurers.

Peter Chadborn, principal at Essex-based IFA firm, CBK, said it was important to get as many IFAs on board as possible. He said: "This is crucial because they are the ones that have to go and see the public. IFAs need confidence in the industry. However, unfortunately, I think IFAs in general have lost confidence in the protection sector. At the end of the day, they are the ones that are sitting in front of the consumer, so they are the ones that need to fall back in love with the industry because advisers only recommend products if they have confidence in them."

He added: "I think the COVER campaign will do well as it appeals to the readership and not just larger insurers."

Rod McKie, head of marketing at Aegon Scottish Equitable Individual Protection, said: "Aegon UK fully supports the COVER Promoting Protection campaign. Any way in which we can help raise the important issue of protection is welcome. It has become apparent that no company or institution can fully achieve this on its own. We must act together as an industry if we are to make any progress in closing the protection gap."

To gain political support, campaign supporters will be making a presentation to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Insurance and Financial Services on 27 March at 11am.
