Private healthcare provider YourHealth Plus has gone into administration, it has emerged.

The discount healthcare provider, which was in the middle of a restructure, went into administration on 28 December last year.

Details remain sketchy, but the firms backing the company called for it to go into administration and there has been no confirmation on how many jobs have been lost.

The industry is hoping that, in the coming weeks, the reasons for the company going into liquidation will become clearer.

The company's competitors are set to benefit from YourHealth Plus' existing clients, who have all been reassigned back to the companies that they initially defected from before they took out policies with YourHealth Plus.

A number of firms have rallied round the company and taken on the existing customers, with big clients stepping in and backing up cover from 1 January 2007 and the smaller companies helping individual clients.

One company helping out was Bupa, which took on 5,000 existing corporate customers. This was after the brokers were called in and assigned clients who moved away from their original providers back to them.

Commenting on the situation, Marco Bannerman, head of corporate sales at Bupa, said: "When YourHealth Plus went into administration, we were delighted to work closely with our intermediary partners to ensure a smooth transition for those customers who feared their employees would be without cover."

Bannerman added that the demise of the firm illustrated the dangers of companies offering heavily discounted health insurance, which is not sustainable in the long-term.

Officials at YourHealth Plus, which was based in Bracknell, were unavailable for comment.
