Prudential, Norwich Union and Skandia have gone live with UNIPASS, an individual digital certificate created by Origo.

The facility enables IFAs to access the companies' extranets and eradicates the need for multiple passwords and user names within the three websites.

A total of 14 major life companies, including Standard Life, AXA and Friends Provident, are also in the process of implementing the digital certificate. Intermediary portals such as The Exchange and Assureweb are also involved in executing the service.

UNIPASS enables IFAs to securely access the range of services they use on the internet through a digital key, which creates a unique online identity for each IFA.

The digital certificate is funded by providers and is available free of charge to intermediaries at www.unipass.co.uk

Sandy Neilson, chief executive of Origo, said: 'Internet security and ease of access are the cornerstones of successful e-commerce. Standards are vital in enabling everyone involved in the UK's financial services arena to fully embrace the web as a valuable communications channel.'

Nigel Hopwood, head of e-IFA development at Norwich Union, said: 'IFAs need to be confident that provider websites are secure. UNIPASS gives IFAs an independent 'key' which gives them access to a growing number of providers' websites. This will enable them to take full advantage of the wide range of services now delivered via the internet.'

l Origo will be making further announcements on the uptake of UNIPASS at the adviser.tech events in Glasgow on 25 September and in Birmingham on 10 December.
