PPP healthcare has set up a series of guidelines for consultants to follow when billing private patients and insurers for treatment.
The move comes in the absence of an industry code of practice for billing, despite this being recommended by the OFT, and is an attempt to make the billing process as transparent as possible.
Adrian Bull, medical director at PPP healthcare, said: "We believe specialists should be able to charge whatever they believe is appropriate for their service. But if the specialist charges more than we, or any other insurer can reimburse we think it is very important that this information is passed on to the patient before the operation."
He said this would help prevent the patient being stung by an unexpected bill post-treatment. PPP healthcare is also calling on specialists to make one charge per procedure rather than 'unbundling' the costs.
