Nearly six million Brits have lost income through illness or injury, a recent report has revealed.

According to a survey of 1,000 randomly selected people, conducted by Standard Life, £31.65bn has been lost in wages due to time off work because of illness or injury.

Some 58% of respondents said they had been absent for more than a month, while 17% said they had been off work for over a year.

Of the people having to take time off, 38% admitted they had struggled to make ends meet, while 34% had borrowed money to get by. Only 8% said they had some form of insurance to help them.
