A Lloyds syndicate has teamed up with IFA Your Money Now to provide life cover for people who are HIV positive.
Life assurance is being offered to a maximum term of five years and applicants will be required to complete a specialist HIV questionnaire to determine if they qualify.
The syndicate, Kiln, in conjunction with Pulse, is the first insurer to offer cover to HIV applicants in the UK.
Colin Barrett-Treen, man- aging director at Your Money Now, said advances in the treatment of HIV and great improvements in survival rates have led to a softening in the approach of some underwriters.
'For decades now, if you have been diagnosed as being HIV positive, there has been no chance for you to obtain life assurance. But that is all changing now,' he said.
Barret-Treen said he hoped the move would encourage more insurers to review their underwriting practices. 'We will be waiting to see if the market takes this on board. Developments in cover for HIV applicants are overdue and we are hoping this may stimulate other insurers to follow.'
